John of Patmos

Remember now, the beloved John was very, very old. He had lived to see the city of Jerusalem destroyed and at least a million, one hundred thousand Jews massacred. He had lived to see nine hundred and eighty five, at least, towns and villages in the land of Israel sacked and looted and devastated and its occupants killed. Any hope for the soon establishment of a Messianic kingdom in Israel seemed infinitely remote. He had outlived all of his fellow Apostles who had been systematically executed by the system. And he was doomed to die sitting on a rock five miles wide and ten miles long in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea.
